On a lonely farm in northern Minnesota, a husband and wife’s peaceful existence is shattered by the appearance of an unexpected visitor. On a hot stretch of highway in central Texas, a boy befriends a wounded dragon. Spanning two moments in time and space, and blurring the lines between each, The Dragon Play explores what happens when reality and fantasy converge, when desire and duty conflict, and when our deepest secrets show up breathing fire. Nicely done, there was a message in there for everyone.
When I saw the performance I loved the artistic direction of the set; it looked like the sky. The scenic design had the impression of comfort and limitless. I enjoyed that the actors could move around the entire stage up and down. The actors had the ability to create a world that drew you in and kept your attention not just on them but the dialogue and meaning behind it.
What did you find meaningful, evocative, startling, or exciting in the work?
I really appreciated seeing this play because it covers the idea that a relationship can change you and you learn things about yourself that make you grow as a person and may see yourself doing things that may have never crossed your mind. Also The Dragon Play covered and explained the ideas and meaning of happiness and freedom very well. Can you be happy and free at the same time? It depends on what you want out of life. For somebody that wants happiness in stability and a white picket fence type of life the phrase “I love you” means nothing if their significant other won’t be there all the time. Freedom from the past and the ability to go wherever you want, to be constantly experience things is wonderful but there isn’t much time for commitment and that can be a problem in any relationship.
Puzzling but thought-provoking. I find myself still thinking about it, even days later after seeing it. Those were some fine-looking dragons you had in that play.
I loved this production! The script was terrific: a fantastical premise became a completely believable story because of the writing, and also because the actors were so good. Their performances were beautiful and very affecting. This show was one of my favorites among many great shows at the Chance. I highly recommend Dragon Play!
The play was a thought provoking take on romance and sacrifice, with a few light moments. The performances of the actors were outstanding, and the set and costumes blended well with the story.
Interesting and thought provoking play about spreading your wings and making difficult choices
What a surprising–and wonderfully thought-provoking evening!
I went, expecting a child’s parable of some kind, and instead saw a powerful, bittersweet tale that raised questions about chances taken–and opportunities missed. Keiko Elizabeth’s stellar performance in particular still haunts me. Don’t miss this show!
I loved it. The parallel narratives were very thought-provoking, resulting in reflection on one’s own life. Superb acting.
This little gem has a lot of layers to it. It’s funny, sensitive, thought-provoking, mysterious and affirming. My friends and I really enjoyed discussing all its ramifications afterwards. The actors succeed in bringing authenticity and growth to both their characters and the story itself. If you’re not in the mood to see Annie or the like for the 10th time and want something fresh that might both change and entertain you, this is the play to go see and this is the theater to go see it at.
